A celebration of the athletes, journeys and moments that have shaped wheelchair basketball — bringing together Masters (+40) players from around the world to create a new chapter in the sport’s HISTORY from 25th-28th March 2027.

The HISTORY Games is more than a tournament. This landmark event brings together wheelchair basketball athletes for the first-ever Masters tournament of its kind. Masters athletes have decades of life and sport behind them and their STORIES are what makes this inaugural event historic. The name doesn't just describe the tournament, it celebrates the people who will define it. The athletes are not just players, they are HISTORY makers.

In the run up to the games, we will be celebrating these journeys by sharing some inspiring STORIES from the participating HISTORY makers.

The HISTORY Games is where those journeys come together.

This tournament aims to:

• Promote global participation and inclusivity

• Extend athlete participation, engagement, enjoyment and retention

• Recognise and celebrate the contribution of veteran players to the sport by supporting sustainable athlete pathways beyond elite performance

• Strengthen community, legacy, and mentorship within wheelchair and the wider basketball family

• Share STORIES of the many incredible athletes

Some tournaments are about winning, this is about making HISTORY as well.

The GB Masters Basketball Association (formerly British Masters) was established in 1991 and coordinates the largest annual masters basketball weekend tournament for male and female players aged 35+ in the UK. The tournament now hosts around 700 athletes each year.

In 2024, in partnership with British Wheelchair Basketball (BWB), the tournament was expanded to include wheelchair athletes.

In parallel, an International Masters programme was created in 2019, sending 16 age group teams to various World and European Championships and winning 21 international medals to date. Recognising the significant benefits on mental and physical wellbeing of the programme

An International GB Masters Wheelchair team was created in 2025, with the aim of encouraging other countries to follow-suit and create an inclusive global masters community. Since it's inception, we have seen participation numbers grow month on month and the effect on players' mental and physical wellbeing has been incredibly positive. 

As wheelchair basketball continues to grow globally, there is an increasing family of experienced athletes who wish to remain active in structured and competitive environments. Frequently, the only option is to compete in a lower division league with players who are half their age and twice their speed. This increasingly results in a less than enjoyable experience, and eventually players leave the sport.

There is currently no 5v5 international competition for masters wheelchair players, so the HISTORY Games was born. This pioneering event marks a world first, the launch of an international programme dedicated to integrating Masters Wheelchair Basketball and bringing the global community together like never before. The HISTORY Games will welcome Masters athletes from around the globe for an unforgettable week of competition, community connection, and celebration of adaptive sport. It promises to be a landmark moment, not only for Masters athletes, but for the growth and visibility of wheelchair basketball worldwide.
